Signs My Truck’s Automatic Transmission Is Going Bad

Bring your truck to our shop right away if you are having any problems with the automatic transmission. This is a delicate system that needs to be serviced every 30,000 miles in order to operate efficiently. If you have not serviced your truck’s transmission in well over 30,000 miles, you may start to have one or more of the following problems.

Won’t Stay in Gear

The transmission can start to malfunction while you are driving. In some cases, it may not stay in gear. Rather, it will automatically shift into neutral without you doing anything. Unfortunately, this can make driving the truck difficult because the transmission is not in gear.

Won’t Shift the Gears

Another problem that can occur is the transmission can fail to shift the gears when they need it. It may hesitate or refuse to shift the gear. It may also skip gears in the gear cycle.

Won’t Respond

If your transmission is in serious trouble, it will stop responding. No matter what you do, it won’t go into gear and it won’t shift gears. This leaves you dead in the water, figuratively speaking. As such, call for a tow truck to bring your truck to our shop.

Leaks Transmission Fluid

Some things aren’t as bad as the above, but they are still a problem. For example, if you have a transmission fluid leak, this leak needs to be repaired as soon as possible. Usually, all it takes is finding the part that is leaking and replacing it.

Overheats/Runs Hot

If you ignore the leak, you are going to overheat your transmission. The transmission fluid protects the transmission and keeps it cool. As the level decreases due to the leak, the transmission will start to run hotter and hotter.

Makes Strange Noises

A faulty automatic transmission may also make strange noises. For example, you may hear the transmission clunk when you put it into gear. You may also hear the transmission grind when it shifts the gears. Finally, the transmission may hum in neutral.

Vibrates the Truck

The transmission should do a smooth job of shifting the gears. If it vibrates the truck or causes it to jerk, it needs to be serviced right away. This can be a sign of low transmission fluid.
