4 Signs Your Brakes Need Help

Keeping your brakes in good working order is one of the most important things you can do for your safety and the safety of those around you. Luckily, your brakes really do cry for help–weird noises, shaking, a sinking pedal, and warning lights are all indications that it’s time to schedule a brake check right away.

Weird Sounds

Screeching or squealing sounds may be your brakes’ way of alerting you that the brake pad is running low. It’s actually a safety mechanism in most cars for the brakes to squeal as a distress call before the pads run out completely. This way, the driver knows it’s time to bring the car to the mechanic before it’s too late.

If you’re hearing grinding, it’s likely your brakes are already worn out. This means your car is dangerous to drive because braking time will be longer. If you continue to drive on grinding or growling brakes, you risk warping your rotor, which can lead to an even more costly repair.

Shaking

Your brakes don’t just alert you to trouble with sounds–sometimes shaking indicates a brake issue. If your brakes need help, you may notice the brake pedal vibrate when you try to brake. Sometimes, the whole car shakes. Whether it’s just the pedal or the entire car, if you’re feeling shaking, it’s time for a brake check.

Sinking Pedal

A sinking pedal or a pedal that doesn’t feel firm when you apply the brakes can be a scary feeling. It usually means the car is low on brake fluid or has a brake fluid leak. Brake fluid is vital to the braking system because it creates the pressure that allows you to brake. It’s not safe to drive a car with low or leaky brake fluid, so if you’re experiencing a sinking pedal, take your car in for service right away.

Warning Lights

Most cars come with warning lights related to brakes, such as the brake system warning light and the ABS (antilock braking system) light. Sometimes these lights come on temporarily, but if either light remains illuminated, bring your car in for service so a technician can diagnose the problem.

It’s never a good time to need car service, but if you hear weird brake sounds, feel shaking brakes, experience a sinking pedal, or notice brake-related warning lights, don’t wait to bring your car in for service. Waiting could lead to a more costly repair and, more importantly, waiting could be dangerous! For your safety, make sure your brakes are in great shape.
